I am only listing items I have in my personal goat first aid kit. I have used every item except the Epinephrine. However, I’m sure that if I didn’t have the Epinephrine I would need it.
Probios comes in a white tube. Given to a goat by mouth any time they are on an antibiotic. (Can be purchased from TSC, Jeffers or Hoggers)
Baby Aspirin. ¼-1/2 tablet crushed for baby with fever. Also start baby on antibiotic if there is a fever. In a few hours the temp should come down and the baby will be back to eating.
Alcohol swabs or bottle w/cotton balls. Use to clean top of vaccination bottles before inserting needle. I prefer 20 ga ½ inch-3/4 inch needles (except for ivermectin injections I would use 18 ga since the med is sooo thick)
Epinephrine have on hand if you are giving injections yourself. Just in case they have a bad reaction. 1cc p/100 lbs given in the muscle. (Vet Rx)
Neo-Poly-Bac comes in a small tube for eye infections (Vet Rx)
J-Jelly lube to help with stuck babies. I haven’t needed to use this much as there is normally plenty of gooey fluid.
Today tubes & Tomorrow tubes (Can be purchased at TSC or online) to prevent/ help cure mastitis.
Bag Balm use on a sore udder.
Bloat Release. Use on a goat that has had too much grain or is bloating for any other reason. For babies you may need to tube it into their stomach. I would purchase this product before bringing goats home. Bloat release has saved more than one goat. The best price is at Jeffers Goat Supply online.
Re-Sorb (purchased from TSC) or Pro-Lite (purchased from TSC) Tubed to a sick goat’s stomach if they are not drinking fluids on their own.
Revitilyte-Gelling (TSC) is one of my favorite products. I use on a goat that has the runs when Pepto-Bismol isn’t doing the job.
Benadryl or a generic of it (Antihistamine/Diphenhydramine) capsules. I break open the capsule and mix with goat milk and give to a baby goat if they are congested from pneumonia. I have never tried the liquid form but it probably works just as well.
Python Dust (TSC) used every third day on a goat with lice
LA-200 (Anti-biotic ) Best price I have found is online at Jeffers Livestock for 250ml bottle. Given every other day 4.5cc p/100 lbs or once daily at 3.0cc p/100 lbs. Good for a retained placenta and a number of other issues. Give to a goat if the runs are not going away.. I avoid giving LA200 to a pregnant goat. I have read that it could cause bone deformities in unborn kids. Instead, I give Penicillin if they are pregnant. (given twice a day ) LA200 is stronger and is my first choice and both are given under the skin(SQ). Do NOT give Penicillin and LA200 at the same time.
Injectable Iron (Iron Dextran-100) given every other day in the muscle 4cc p/100 lbs. (Tractor Supply has it on hand) Helps to restore iron levels to a goat with worm problems. Great to use since it takes a goat awhile to get back to the needed iron levels
12.5% Dimenthox or Corid given by mouth. If a baby has runs especially around weaning time I would suspect coccidiosis. The best cure is one of these medications. Can be ordered from Jeffers or Hoeggers and local feed stores. I prefer using 12.5% Dimenthox since Corid can cause Goat Polio and then you’ll need to treat the goat with Thymine to cure the polio. (Thymine is something a goat producer should also have on hand- Vet Rx)
Nolvasan Antiseptic Ointment used for severe cuts. Purchased from a vet and tends to be expensive. If the cut isn’t major I use Iodine. I also use iodine on the umbilical cords of newborn kids.
CD/T vaccine 2cc given under the skin. I give kids 2cc’s at 8 & 10 weeks old. Pregnant does also receive 2cc’s in their last 4 weeks of gestation and all other goats receive a booster once a year.
CD/T Antitoxin I keep a 250ml bottle in the fridge at all times. If a baby goat looks bloated & hunched they should receive immediately. At least 2cc under the skin for a goat under 10 lbs ( 1cc/5 lbs every 6 hours)
SoBe 1cc/40 lbs given under the skin or MuSe 1cc/200 lbs (Vet Rx). I give to a kid goat at 8 weeks old with a booster every year and to pregnant mothers in the last 4 weeks of gestation to prevent a retained placenta.
Fortafied B Complex Make sure the bottle you have says fortified. This insures there is a full dose of Thymine in the dose. Give to a sick goat twice a day 5cc p/100 lbs.
Blu-Kote is an antiseptic I use on wounds or mites
Goat Nutri-Dench 1fl oz p/100 lbs every 8 hours for sick goat or 2 pumps to a newborn kid.
Vitamin E capsules 400iu given to a sick goat showing signs of white muscle disease (selenium deficiency).
Blood Stop Powder is applied freely to wound area or hoof after a hoof trimming that drew blood.
Blackstrap Molassesmixed in warm water for a pregnant goat that is showing signs of pregnancy toxemia or a calcium deficiency. It has 20% calcium & 25% iron per 1 Tbsp. Mix 1 part molasses to 2 parts Karo Syrup.
5% Dextrose Give to a dehydrated goat by IV. 300ml to an adult doe (RX) These fluids are important to have on hand at all times and will save a goat too weak to drink.
Dewormers Liquid safeguard, Cydectin, Valbazen & injectable Ivomec Plus. I deworm as needed and within 3 days after a goat has kidded.
Calcium Drench given 1 oz at first sign of kidding and 1 oz after kidding. I prefer giving molasses over this product but I have it on hand for goats that have multiples.
Save-a-kid syringe. I order these by the dozen. If a newborn kid does not nurse within 20 minutes I give them 2 oz of their mother’s milk directly into their little tummies. Within 5 minutes of receiving milk they have the warmth & energy needed to nurse. Jeffers livestock online has the best price.
Children's chewable multivitamins (2 tabs), Tums (500mg of calcium), Potassium Gluconate (99mg of potassium), Magnesium (250mg- use only 1/4 tab daily) I crush the pills and mix with water to give as drench for pregnacy toxemia or cover pills in molases and give to the doe. Also, give molases/karo sryup combo at the same time. The goal is to get the does's potassium&calcium levels back to their normal ratio.
